Living in the Mojave and the Sonoran Deserts of the Southwestern US, desert tortoises live about 50 – 80 years. They grow slowly and have low reproductive rates. They spend about 95% of their time in burrows to keep cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Some desert Tortoise populations have declined by as much as 90% since the 1980s.
