The American badger prefers to live in open grasslands with available prey, such as mice, squirrels and groundhogs. Stocky with short, power legs, huge foreclaws and distinctive head markings, badgers dig to pursue prey into their dens. Badgers and coyotes sometimes hunt as a team. for example, ground squirrels go underground to escape the coyote, becoming prey for the badger. Generally nocturnal, badgers weigh about 20 to 30 pounds.
